"The precepts of the Lord gladden the heart". The refrain for the psalm presents us with the essence that fills the scripture passage in today's readings.

The first reading describes a solemn religious ceremony led by the scribe, Ezra, in which the whole community consisting men, women and children "old enough to understand" gather and participate actively and wholeheartedly. As the Law of God is proclaimed by Ezra, the people "listened attentively". As he blesses the Lord, they raised their hands and answered "Amen" and bowed down. When the Law is explained to them, they understood the Law and began to weep. Ezra reminds them, however, to be joyful since it is God who has given the Law. They have a celebration and share what they have with the poor. The Law of God brings them joy.

When Jesus sends out the seventy-two disciples ahead of him, he gives them a number of instructions. They are sent as sheep among wolves. They will be defenceless, and will have to depend totally on God for their needs. There is no time to greet anyone on the road because of the urgency of the task given to them. These instructions that Jesus gives emphasise the importance of the Word of God. It must not be treated as a human message. Infact, harsh consequences await those who close their hearts to God's message. Surely, whether we choose to be open to receive, or to close ourselves from God's Word, is up to us. However, let us be reminded that there are consequences to our decision. May we choose wisely!

Lord, help me rejoice in Your Word.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
