John advises us not to love the things of this world. That sounds rather negative - after all, many of the things we enjoy were given to us by God.
John was not telling us we must go live in a cave. But our love must be well-ordered - we love the Lord first and foremost and love other things in and through him.
The things that this life can bring us should never distract us or pull us away from our relationship with God. Doing the will of God should be our greatest joy rather than a burdensome cross.
Anna was a patient and faithful woman of God. She prayed constantly in the temple, awaiting the Lord's redemption of the nation. Finally, the day arrived, and it was granted to her to encounter the infant Jesus.
She praised God, giving thanks, and witnessing to the wonderous deeds of Jesus even as his life had barely begun. The kingdom of God is built with such people -- holy, steadfast, faithful, and patient. Let us try to join Anna in her holy and patient waiting. The Lord is not far away.
Lord, may I wait with patience and faith Your coming into our lives. Amen.
