"Begging him to let them touch even the fringe of his cloak. And all who touched him were cured." Many modern people, with little sense of the omnipresence of God and the spontaneity of God's grace, may feel that the crowds were somewhat superstitious in wanting to touch the Fringe of Jesus cloak. But in human affairs, simple gestures can have great significance: a simple handshake can be almost miraculous in certain situations, an embrace can restore lost friendship. There is no reason why a simple act of faith can ring one to experience God's healing power. By his great power of imagination, Jesus could turn a simple human activity into a vehicle for communicating the doctrine of God's kingdom.

The same can be said of many human activities. We pray before meals asking God's blessing. One famous writer once suggested that, similarly, we should "say grace" before, for example, a musical concert. Touching the fringe of Jesus' cloak was endowed with meaning and value by the sick people or their friends who did it. Blessing oneself with holy eater on entering a church is similarly an act of profound spiritual significance. All things on the face of the earth can help us attain the purpose for which we have been created.

St Ignatius teaches us in his Spiritual Exercises that with a little act of faith, we can quickly come in touch with God.
