Spiritual gifts do not signify that one is holier or better than others. Many at Corinth were lording it over others, convinced of their superiority or special status. Paul insisted that anything that we do, regardless of how 'grand' or impressive it might be, is useless if done without love. And he defined love: humble, patient, kind, and always seeking the good of others.

Love is all we take with us from this life. Love is the only way we know God and are known by him. The purpose of our life is to learn the lessons of love.

People often have very set ideas about holiness - especially what it should look like. God usually speaks through ordinary people, who might not be exceptional in appearance or ability. Just think of St Paul and his difficulty in speaking. Jesus observed that the crowds complained about John the Baptist because of his extreme asceticism and wild appearance. But they also complained about Jesus because his lifestyle was more moderate and balanced. Go figure! We should listen to the proclaimed message with our hearts rather than being overly critical of the one who bears it.
