The feast of the Assumption of Our Mother celebrates the victory of 'the lowly servant', who during Annunciation said, "Behold the handmaid of the Lord".
Much like Jesus' resurrection, Our Lady's assumption is the gratuitous gift that God gives to anyone faithful to God's call. The apocalyptic vision of the first reading portrays how the simple acts of Mother Mary, while she was alive, scripted the salvific history of humankind. All glory be to God!
In 1950, Pope Pius XII declared the Assumption of Mary as an official dogma of the Roman Catholic Church.
Isaiah foretold Jesus' life thus, "a bruised reed he will not break, he will faithfully bring forth justice". This feast also proclaims where Jesus got his meekness from and so his thirst for justice. Today's feast encourages them to take heart when the world despises the advocates for human rights and those who journey with the oppressed.
Dear Mother Mary, pray for us, Your children, that we might take courage in the greater salvation history in these troubled times; what matters is that we followed God's will and endured the consequences that it calls for. Amen
