The disciples of Jesus had only the clothes on their backs, a staff and sandals on their feet when they were sent on mission by Jesus. They were not allowed to take even a spare tunic. Furthermore, they were to depend on people's hospitality and generosity for their daily needs.

Amos did not possess any qualification in Jewish law or was a member of the organisation linked to the temple. He was only a shepherd who was also looking after sycamore trees. No wonder Amos was rejected from the temple in Bethel. But he was called and sent on mission by God to the people of Israel.

What is God saying to us today? Let us recall the words of God to Paul: "My grace is sufficient for you." When God calls and sends, He knows what we need to make a difference in our lives and others. God gives us what we need and not what we want. It is a call to be totally dependent on God for our daily needs.

Do we, as disciples of Christ, understand what really matters when God calls and sends us to people and situations that He brings our way each day? Is what we do about what He wants or what we want?

In the letter to the Ephesians, Paul says, "Before the world was made, he chose us in Christ...to become his adopted children. Therefore, we have to ask ourselves, "Do we, as God's children, live for the praise of God's glory?" or "Do we live for our own glory"?

Lord, help me live for Your glory.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
