The Golden calf story can serve as a "morality story", namely a story that teaches us a lesson for life. In the Bible "morality stories" will help to purify and deepen our faith and strengthen our spirituality.

The people knew that Moses had ascended the mountain for an encounter with God, on their behalf. We human beings love to be in control, but that is not one of our better qualities. So, while waiting for Moses, they began to feel that he should not be taking so long, which was an unfounded judgement. They had no evidence to support, so they asserted their control by "turning aside from the way that was set out for them by God. They did something utterly senseless and useless, even puerile.

We have been taught by St Paul that "love is patient" (1 Cor 13:1). When we feel that things getting out of control, then love for ourselves, for God and others will keep us from growing impatient and making our own golden calves to reassert our control,
