Paul recognised that the only way he could effectively proclaim the Gospel was to use his own life as an example. Actions speak far louder than words. There is a danger of being flashy and eloquent but lacking any spiritual substance beneath the surface. Paul's 'boasting' consisted solely of proclaiming what Jesus had done in and through him - it was the Lord's doing, not his. We cannot possess our goodness or what Jesus has done for us - we can only share it. Our lives reveal his mercy and grace.

Why use a sleazy and dishonest manager as an example? Luke often uses shady and humorous characters from the everyday lives of the people in his teachings. Jesus did not call on his followers to imitate the manager's dishonesty, but his ingenuity and foresight. He didn't just sit passively and wait for disaster or events to overtake him - he took positive steps to ensure his future.

Likewise, Jesus exhorted his followers to use their money, time, and talents to serve others. If we do, we will certainly be welcomed into God's kingdom. What we do today, continues into the future and eternity.
