Today, the Church celebrates the Feast of the Guardian Angels. That angels exist and are always in the presence of human beings is part of our faith. Describing the close relationship between the angel and a Christian, the Catechism of the Catholic Church states, "From the beginning until death, human life is surrounded by their watchful care and intercession" and that: 'Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life', St. Basil" (CCC, 336).

The place and mission of angels in God's salvation plan is highlighted in today's scripture readings. The passage from Exodus describes how God sends an angel before the Israelites to protect and guide them to the Promised land. In the gospel passage, Jesus teaches that the angels of the "little ones" are constantly in the presence of God. The psalmist also expresses this sentiment, who announces that God commands angels to accompany a believer in his or her daily life.

They are, also, sent to warn, admonish and, where necessary, mete out punishment as God commands them. This is why God advises the people to "give him (the angel) reverence and listen to all that he says" and offer him no defiance "for my name is in him". This is why Jesus warns the disciples, "See that you never despise any of these little ones..." For they will be present at Christ's return and will serve at his judgement.

Lord, help me give reverence to my angel.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
That every baptised person may be engaged in evangelisation, available to the mission, by being witnesses of a life that has the flavour of the Gospel.
