The story of David slaying Goliath is evidence of the power of God. David was only a slim youth with a slingshot, and Goliath was a giant with a sword and a shield-bearer. When Goliath taunted him, David made it very clear that Goliath wasn't only fighting him but also God. God wants to use us to win the battle against the evil in the world even when we feel powerless to do so. Are we willing to trust God to equip us to fight that battle?
The reading from Mark's Gospel is about the observance of the Sabbath - is it better to heal someone or observe the Sabbath?
Rules can be opposed to compassion. The Pharisees are concerned with adhering to the rules, whereas Jesus has compassion on the man with the withered hand. Jesus is angered by the hardness of heart on the part of the Pharisees. And it is obvious that they were looking for evidence they could use to bring charges against Jesus. Jesus' message is always one of love and compassion. From the very beginning, Jesus' wise teachings and actions were met with hostility from those in power in the temple.
Lord, help me to follow Your way of love and compassion.
