"What do you want me to do for you " Jesus asks the blind man today after he calls out to Jesus to have pity on him. Today we can also call out to Jesus in this way. What do we want Jesus to do for us ? Employing the words of the Lord to the church in Ephesus in the First Reading, "I know all about you: how hard you work and how much you put up with... Know, too, that you have patience, and have suffered for My name without growing tired," we can be consoled that we have tried our best to live a good Christian life in following Jesus. We can continue to ask Jesus for mercy when we fail to do so. Just as the Lord calls the Ephesians to repent because they "have less love now than they used to", we can ask Him for pity like the blind man. We must rely on God when we don't have the strength to continue our faith journey. Thus the psalmist prays, "He is like a tree planted beside the flowing waters, that yields its fruit in due season and whose leaves shall never fade; and all that he does shall prosper" Yes, we must depend on the Lord for grace and courage amid trials and tribulations. We must not give up calling on God for help even when the people around us can stop us from doing so, like the crowd does to the blind man – they scold him and tell him to keep quiet. What do we want Jesus to do for us today We can beg Him to help us by supporting us in our life challenges, to persevere despite many obstacles.
