Jesus is addressing a sensitive problem in the life of the Church. Certain members simply do not belong to the community because they show, by what they say or do, that they are not disciples of Jesus. Extreme care must be taken to distinguish them from disciples who are merely weak or ignorant. It is not a question of ridding the Church of sinners but instead of encouraging them to recognise the presence of Jesus in their lives.

A leader must practise forbearance and patience and reconcile sinners. It is upon this duty that the authority to "bind and loose" is vested. This ensures a way for many people to experience greater freedom in their lives.

Moses, the great freedom movement leader, spoke with Yahweh face-to-face and encouraged the people to strive for a life of freedom. We see that he did not live to set foot on the soil of freedom, yet he remained faithful to the people and sought the blessings of God on them.

Lord, may we be slow to condemn and criticise but swift to forgive, accept and reconcile those we come in contact with. Grant us the grace to be bearers of Your mercy and unconditional love.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
