What sort of descendants would a man have if he reveres the Lord, takes delight in God's commands, and is upright (vv 1-2)? The Psalmist says, "his sons will be powerful on earth" and his children "blessed" (v 2).
What sort of ancestors do we wish to become to those who come after us? Would we be remembered as those who "revere the Lord" (v 1)? Those who take delight in God's commands (v 1)? Those who are upright (v 2)? Those who have no fear of evil news because of the "firm heart" have trust in the Lord (v 7)? Those are fearless because of their "steadfast heart" (v 8)? Those who are generous to the poor (v 9)? Those whose "justice stands firm forever" (v 9)?
In the present, we live. Our choices, lifestyle, how we honour or dishonour God, how we treat or mistreat our family and friends, our fellow citizens and Christians - all have gracious effects and terrible repercussions. We may live authentically or pretentiously (appearing to be someone we are not to impress others). However, God sees our secret emotions and knows our secret thoughts. Let us live in such a way that we will leave a spiritually rich, long-lasting memory and legacy for our descendants and those who come after us, enabling them to receive God's abundant and overflowing blessings. And in living thus, we shall open ourselves to peace and contentment; and, ultimately, receive the honour that comes from God (v 9).
Lord, enlighten the eyes of our mind so that we can see what hope Your call holds for us.
