Have you ever felt God is calling you personally? One common immediate reaction to anyone who encounters such experience is unworthiness. Today we hear again the call of the prophet Isaiah. In approximately 742 BC, Isaiah encountered God. The Lord is not directly visible but the mere train of God's robe fills the Temple-an indication of God's greatness. Isaiah's reaction is fear, he is aware that he is not worthy to encounter God.

God, however, does not back away. Instead, God sends a seraphim (angel of burning fire) who uses heat to purify Isaiah. The encounter then deepens as God asks a question: "Whom shall I send?" and Isaiah bravely responds: "Here am I. Send me!" (Is. 6:8).

The Gospel relates to this, Jesus addresses His followers-people who are called for a purpose. The Lord warns that firstly, no one who is called is superior to the master who calls. They will be persecuted just as Jesus was persecuted. It should not be a surprise if they suffer. Yet there is more: "So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows'' (Mt. 10:31). In the end, God's care for us is greater than any challenge we will face in life. Jesus invites us to courageously say 'yes' to His invitation and boldly share His love in the world.

Lord Jesus, what is Your call to me today? I am not worthy to follow You, but I trust in Your care for me. Send me!
