Paul included the part of an early Christian hymn about Christ in his letter to remind the Philippians to treat one another with love and humility. The supreme example of this way life is Christ Himself. The believers are to be like Christ, Who was unselfish as He did not cling to His position of being in "form of God". By sharing the nature of humanity, Christ humbled Himself in obedience to God, even to the extent of suffering and undergoing death on the cross.
However, the sacrifice of Christ does not end in vain. The second part of the hymn shows that God exalted Jesus, and His given name is above every other name. Indeed, what happened to Jesus is an example to all Christians, who are called to humble themselves and even undergo death in bearing witness to the Gospel.
Paul detected a complacent attitude among the Philippians, just as Jesus had discerned such an attitude among the Pharisees and lawyers. They feel protected merely by observing religious rules. In response, Jesus tells them a parable about those who take an invitation to a banquet too lightly. Because of their casual attitude, they lose their right to share at the table and as such, are replaced by others. What about us? Are we complacent or casual about our own attitude towards Christ and our faith? It would be good for us to reflect on this today.
Lord, now I learn faith is not a casual attitude, help me to follow Your discerning attitude daily.
