We have all heard the expression 'the patience of Job.' This virtue is profoundly uttered in, "I know that my redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand on the earth."(Jb 19:25). He endured unimaginable loss and suffering, but he never lost hope or rejected God. The burning promise inside him assured him that his Redeemer was alive and that he would be able to encounter God while still on this earth. We face many trials and difficulties, and at times, loss and pain. Sometimes, there are solutions and reasons, while at other times, mystery reigns. One thing we can cling to: God never leaves us, and we will encounter Him if only we remain faithful.

Patience is indeed in the school of the Lord's discipleship. Jesus sent out seventy disciples to proclaim the approaching reign of God and to provide comfort and hope. Jesus observed that the harvest was plentiful but the laborers few - a condition that still exists today. They were to travel light and stay on the move. Jesus instructed them not to waste time on those who were contemptuous in their rejection of the word. He spoke with an urgency that we seem to have lost today. The situation is the same, but surely it is by our patience in the Lord that we open as many minds and hearts as is possible to God.
