"He who shuts his ear to the poor man's cry shall himself plead and not be heard" (Proverb 21:13). Such words of counsel beg us to ponder the cases of discarding the pleading words of those in dire need of care. Imagine the cries, not only in the orphanages but the old folk homes and caregivers. They deserve our sensitive attention. What have we done? Have the words of Jesus to the crowd, " who is My mother and My brother" sounded hollow to us?
This short episode of affirming family ties placed Jesus surrounded by the crowd, thus obstructing His mother and brothers from getting close to Him, they were made to look as outsiders; our hearts will definitely incline towards them. Naturally, our biological connection pesters that we give recognition to the values of filial honor within family. However, Jesus' response with this seemingly cutting message, "My mother and My brothers are those who hear the Word of God and put it into practice," is in actual fact, affirming that His mother and His brothers have done their duty of being mother and brother to Him. Now, He poses the question to the crowds: 'Have you not understood the parable of the sower which I just delivered? (Lk 8:4-15) Is there any inkling at all within you wanting to be His mother, brother or sister?
Dear Jesus, our affective relationship with You is reflected in our regard of others, may we place You as the centre of all our relationships.
