If God were to ask me today, what the idols in my
life are, is there anything which I would find very difficult
to detach from and to give up? Am I ready to be free from indolence due to my enslavement to technological convenience?
The antagonistic Jews reacted to Jesus with claims that they were never enslaved to anyone by the very privilege of being sons of Abraham. Hence, the notion of being free was an insult to them. Such arrogance concealed a forgetfulness of their ancestors' exodus and exilic events to foreign powers and rulers. They stubbornly claimed entitlement to being called sons of Abraham. However, was that a guarantee to entering the Kingdom of peace, righteousness and justice?
As Jesus was slowly revealing His identity and mission, He was actually guiding the Jews to revisit and to admit their identity and mission as a light to the nations. However, they failed to submit to this truth, personified by Jesus. Insisting that they were free and were not subject to anyone, frantically not wanting to submit to Jesus. They abhorred Jesus and hearing Him tease their conscience. Here is the truth - one cannot claim to be free merely because one has been baptised or belongs to a church, one's life of faith and hope must be reflected in the charitable service towards others, especially the needy.
Lord Jesus, empower me to say no to slothfulness, utilizing the technological advances wisely and recognizing that You are ultimately the Truth.
