The advance of science and technology to claim absolute truth has its setback. With AI, anything portrayed in the media is suspicious. While science accepts empirical evidence as the sole criteria for determining truths, today's readings offer us two alternative 'unscientific' facets in confronting the stupendous truth of the Resurrection as a physical reality: that of faith and the interior disposition of the witnesses. While the other three evangelists' post-Resurrection narratives stress His physicality, from having breakfast with them to showing them His wounds, St Mark emphasises on the unbelief of those who could not grasp the significance of this Resurrection event. Jesus selected "uneducated laymen" (Acts 4: 14) and Mary Magdala, individuals of open heart and simple faith but without material resources to reveal His glorification because He knew that with their simplicity of faith, they would believe so as to understand, and trust without reservation. While He rebuked the Apostles for their obstinacy, He also knew that they loved Him in spite of their incredulity. What astounded the world was their transformed lives which became clear evidence of Jesus' Resurrection and it characterised their entire evangelising mission.
Faith is a transformative journey that draws the intangible into a concrete reality through a personal encounter with Jesus Christ. The disciples' slowness to believe reveals to us not so much their weaknesses but so that our faith could be strengthened by their doubt. Now, are we more eager than them in proclaiming the kerygma to others?
Lord, I believe You; help me be your witness in a derisive crowd.
