Faced with new technologies, it is necessary to re-examine our attitudes towards new and unfamiliar things in the light of faith.
The reading from Acts today describes an incident in the time of the Apostles, when Peter and John were imprisoned for preaching about the risen Jesus. Their preaching was considered controversial by the religious authorities of that time, who tried to silence them, afraid of their growing influence. In recent days, we may feel AI, that new, unfamiliar technology, is threatening our Christian values and way of life. Are we to discard AI totally or see it as a new tool to evangelize?
In response to the persecution, the community in Jerusalem raised their voices in prayer, "Master, help Your servants to proclaim Your message with all boldness." As they prayed, they were filled with the Holy Spirit and they proclaimed the Word of God boldly. They placed their trust in God, Who affirmed their message by the miracles He worked through them.
Jesus boldly raises our eyes to see the Kingdom of God anew in our lives. Like Nicodemus who came to seek Jesus and was told to see beyond human birth, we beg to learn from Jesus to recognize the work of the Holy Spirit where we least expect it. In this way, no new technology could threaten us and no new crisis is insurmountable, for God will see us through.
Dear Lord, hold us close to You, let nothing disturb us so much that we dismiss our line of hope in You.
