A company's mission statement explains the purpose for its existence, values, and services offered. Isaiah 61 (v1-2) provides Jesus with the perfect mission statement which He uses to inaugurate His public ministry. He also reveals His identity as the Messiah (the 'anointed' one), proving that the Old Testament is the New foretold and the New is the Old fulfilled. The 'action plans' of Jesus were clear as were His subjects: simply to bring the good news to the spiritually and materially poor and oppressed, those burdened by sin and blinded by ignorance. It was to be a year hallowed and set apart for service to God.
As baptised Christians, St Paul designates us as the one Body of Christ with many parts (1 Cor 12:27). What then is our purpose and mission? It is this: that we must use our diverse God-given talents for spreading the Good News, building up and edifying the community. In this regard, can I write a mission statement for myself to live in conformity to God's Will? Ezra and his people turn to the Word of God in confronting ungodly practices. They were enlightened by the Word of God because they listened, received, responded, and rejoiced in His Word.
As we celebrate the Word of God, let the mantra 'Your words are spirit, Lord, and they are life' seep into us. We are assured that God is faithful to His Word, promises and revelation.
Lord, may the spoken words of my mouth and thoughts of my heart reflect Your goodness and love.
