St Paul's epistle to the Romans, presented us with the "True Self" and the "Unspiritual Self". The True Self wishes to do the "good things" (v19) and "dearly loves God's Law" (v22). The Unspiritual Self carries out "the sinful things" (v19), acts against the will of the True Self (v20), and is a "prisoner of that law of sin" (v23). Jesus teaches His listeners to apply their knowledge to see the need of the day.

We can all identify with the True Self and the Unspiritual Self. Our daily Examen would reveal to us where and why, we have erred in our thoughts, words, and actions. However much we despair, like St Paul we ask, "Who will rescue me from this body doomed to death?" – and like St Paul too we say, "Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!" (v25). We praise God through Jesus Christ we are rescued!

The Psalmist teaches us so as to be living out our True Self. Pray to God to be taught "discernment ... knowledge" and the "statutes" (v66). He declares that God's "precepts" {command, rule of conduct, moral instruction} give Him life, which is why He says, He "will never forget" them (v93) but "seek" them (v 94). He trusts in God's commands (v66) and regards God's law as his "delight" (v77). Let us live thus, and continually come into our True Self.

Lord, help us not to harden our hearts today, but listen to Your voice.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day jul be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
