Among all the prophets, the most prominent would be Elijah. He is the only prophet who raised someone from the dead and the only prophet taken up to heaven without seeing physical death. During the Transfiguration, Elijah appeared alongside Moses as the representatives of the prophets. But what makes him so prominent? What set him apart from all the prophets?
Scripture tells us that he stood up to King Ahab and Queen Jezebel, showing no fear whatsoever. His bravery and zeal extended to his confrontation with the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel, an episode that looked like something out of a movie. Although he was outnumbered, he was unfazed and put his trust totally in God.
The Book of Ecclesiasticus tells us of his deeds and bravery but for me, the most important and remarkable trait of Elijah was his absolute faith, trust and obedience to God. It was he who discovered that God was not in the noise and chaos but in the silence. In this day and age where zeal and obedience are seemingly lacking, Elijah stands out as a model for all of us to follow. More importantly, it is in silence that we can hear the voice of God and not in noise and chaos.
Let us pray that we will be courageous enough to imitate Elijah and to be a prophet to this modern world.
