Life is full of compromise, whether we make them intentionally or otherwise. For some, it might mean accepting a job because it's necessary and not because it's preferred. For others, it might be adjusting one's schedule for the sake of others. In many of these cases, the one making the compromise may feel inconvenienced or even burdened by having to make the compromise in the first place. This might be what the three different men in today's Gospel may be feeling as they tried to follow the Lord but had something pulling them back. They were drawn by the teachings of the Lord, but could not find it in themselves to follow Him fully.

We're reminded that there can be no compromise in being a disciple. The call to follow the Lord needs to be answered wholeheartedly and not in half measures. Being a disciple means putting the Lord as the first priority, not allowing any other distractions to compromise our following Him. That's not to say that our families or other aspects of life are not important, but the Lord is asking us all to put His call to follow as the top priority and to avoid allowing our discipleship to be compromised. The process of growing into discipleship is something that takes time and practice. We pray for the grace to be able to place the Lord as our top priority, following Him without compromise.
