Matthew's version of the story of Jesus stilling the storm is a very important and interesting one for Bible study, especially when we compare it with Mark's version. In the section preceding this story, Matthew has the stories of two men who wished to follow Jesus. In this context, it is important to see that Matthew insists that Jesus went up into the boat first and was then followed by His disciples. Before the actual miracle, Jesus speaks about "little faith". Therefore Matthew has added a dimension to the story. It is no longer simply a miracle story: it has become a parable of life in the Church. The boat represents the Church, while the stormy seas and wind represent the rather uncertain and often dangerous world in which the Church must carry on the mission of the Gospel. We can only enter this Church by following Jesus. Even though we have followed Jesus into the Church, we may find that our faith is still a "little faith". The storms of life may challenge that faith. Then we must pray: "Lord, save us, we perish".
