The first reading today recounts the death of Jacob, the father of the twelve tribes of Israel, in Egypt. It also narrates the coming death of Joseph, his most distinguished son, who achieved great power and dignity in Egypt. Despite his political power, though, Joseph always remained loyal to his father and to Yahweh, the God of Israel.
Perhaps we can see in Joseph an example of Jesus' gospel teaching on discipleship. The disciple must imitate his Master, even in suffering and persecution. He must be prepared to speak the truth openly, confident and unafraid, because he is sure that God is with him.
Authentic discipleship is just as necessary - and just as challenging - in our own time. While we must "speak the truth in love", always desiring the good of those we speak to, still we must have the courage to stand for what we believe in even when it is unpopular. We do not look for conflict. We are followers of the Prince of Peace. But at the same time we cannot compromise the message of Jesus, even when it is unpopular or violently opposed. At such times, the authentic disciple is clearly revealed. He or she is the one who hears the words of Jesus: "Do not be afraid, for I have overcome the world."
Lord, I believe, help me to overcome the evil in me.
