After the feeding of the 5,000, the crowd, now very excited, goes in search of Jesus. The people eventually find Him on the other side of the lake from where the feeding took place - in Capernaum. They ask Him a simple question, 'Rabbi, when did you come here?' It is much deeper in meaning than they realise. It points to the real origins of Jesus which they have not yet grasped. So he tells them that they are looking for Him not because of the 'signs', that is, the real meaning behind what Jesus had done for them but simply to get more bread, more free handouts. He points them in the direction of the real food - which is the teaching of Jesus and His Way. This is the only thing that will nurture them for the life that never ends. But many of them are not ready for this 'bread' yet. I may ask myself in my prayer, What exactly am I looking for when I approach Jesus? Do I just want to get some 'handout' or do I wish to know how I can be fully identified with Him and His Way?
O Lord, Your light of truth guides us to the Way of Christ.
