Today is often known as 'Good Shepherd Sunday' because the Gospel is always taken from chapter 10 of John's Gospel. In today's part of the chapter Jesus presents Himself as someone totally dedicated to taking care of His sheep, unlike the hired hand who is just doing the job for the money. There is a strong bond between the shepherd and his sheep. He takes care of them, even to the point of being ready to give his life for them. For their part, they are totally committed to being with him in every way. Together, too, sheep and shepherd are concerned that others join the flock. The ultimate goal is that there be one Shepherd and one Flock. That too is our twin responsibility, first, that together we give ourselves totally to the Way of Jesus and, second, that we invite others to join us. For we are utterly convinced that in the Way of Jesus we find the road that leads to true fulfilment - in this life and in the next. This is also Vocation Sunday so we pray that our Church may find the pastors and shepherds it needs to carry on the work of Jesus.
