The compassion of Jesus changes the widow's position. She is gratituitously delivered from her defenceless, precarious condition. The new life given to her son is not just for himself: but in view of his mother to be her support. Her son will live fully to the extent his life is lived for her and others.
The deepest meaning of life/living is to live for others. The Lord of life sees our individual life in terms of others' life. Our life is therefore not worth living unless we are essentially living for others. Life overflows into us through Jesus - the Master of Life. Coming into contact with him is to experience new life which God alone can give us. No pre-requisite for faith is demanded of the mother and the young man. But the recognition of Jesus as Prophet, arouses praise for God who has visited His people. This proclamation of the people in awe and wonder at the works of God is Christological: God in Christ has come to save His people.
We too can make God's presence be felt tangibly in the lives of the unfortunate and sorrowing each time we are moved with compassion and reach out to touch them.
Lord, may Your life in us be fruitful as we become more and more compassionate after Your own heart.
