The presence of someone living a spiritual and upright life inspires and encourages some people. For others, however, this same spiritual person is an irritation and a constant reminder of the path that they should be pursuing. Living according to God's ways in our world is certainly not easy, and there will be many forces arrayed against those who try. Opposition is not a sign of failure or God's displeasure, but an indication that our lives are a living challenge. It is important that we keep trying, for this is infinitely pleasing to God.

Peace is never merely the absence of war or bloodshed, but a state in which people are in harmony with one another and with God. James reminds us that so much strife begins with insecurity, greed, and possessiveness. If our hearts are in harmony with God, we share what we have and who we are. Peacemaking is hard work, but it is God's work! We can dedicate our lives to no nobler cause.

Even those closest to Jesus did not fully grasp the meaning of His teachings. The path to both peace and true greatness lies in humble love and service, not in lording it over others. Only those who are insecure and fearful feel the need to prove themselves by acquiring status; those who are truly on the spiritual path are nourished by the good that they can do for others. Letting go of our ego is the only way to find our true self, and when we find our true self, we find God.

Lord, help me to follow the path of humility and service.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
