John's call to repentance awakens in his listerners a sense of God's coming and His presence in their lives. As a fore-runner to Jesus' coming. John pointed out to the people the One who was coming after him. Today he is confronting us with a decision to repent as a preparation to encounter the Messiah. This preparation requires us to strive to live 'holy and saintly lives, so as to be ready to welcome the Messiah who promises us the new heaven and the earth, the place where righteousness will be at home.' ( 2 Pt. 3:12-13).
During this Advent season, let us take up this challenge to change and transform our lives so that we become joyful messengers of Christ's coming, announcing peace and hope in this world where violence, greed, injustice are prevalent. Let us also express our solidarity with the deprived, marginalized in our society with whom Jesus identified Himself.
God help us to be heralds of Your Good News to those around us especially those who are needy and underprivileged.
