Great catastrophes or personal tragedies and struggle often seem like the end of the world. The prophecy speaks of the misery that the Israelites brought on themselves by injustice and the lack of spiritual ideals. But according to the prophecy, there will be a remnant that will live in justice, truth, fidelity, and compassion. There is always life that continues - life that is wiser, humbler, and stronger. God is the God of life, not death. The experience of suffering itself can be a great teacher and purifier if we are open to growth and change. If we are not, such experiences can make us bitter, cynical, and disillusioned. The choice is always ours to make.
Human beings are like the two sons in the parable. Religious people often say that they will live according to the teachings of Jesus: compassion, justice, non-violence, and generosity. But many do not. There are others who might say that they have no faith or whose lives may be very disordered. And yet these are the people who often respond to Jesus joyfully and enthusiastically. They know pain well and they are aware of their brokenness and need. We must beware of passing judgment on anyone - even ourselves! Let us begin today to follow in the footsteps of the Master.
Lord, may I always walk in Your ways.
