Jesus' teaching made a deep impression on the people who heard him. Though the Gospel reading today implies that this impression came from the authority with which he taught, we certainly should understand that the content of his teaching also made a deep impression on them: "Here is a teaching that is new and with authority behind it."

In the Bible, the doctrine of hope is generally taught indirectly rather than directly, and one of the words which signify such doctrine is the word "new." Thus, when the people are impressed by the newness of Jesus' teaching, we should understand that his words, his authority, and so even his very person and presence instilled in their hearts a realization that there was reason for hope. In his words of hope we recognize Jesus' divine nature: His words are God's words. As I write this we see the impact of the great "financial tsunami" that is improverishing the livelihood of many. The Pope has challenged us to look to the foundation of our lives. Let us take to heart the Pope's exhortation to make the word of God the foundation of our lives.

Father in heaven, grant that today and every day, we may listen to Your voice with hearts made more perceptive by Your light and Your grace.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
That the Pastors of the Church may always be docile to the action of the Holy Spirit in their teaching and in their service to God's people.
