In former times, the Israelite high priest entered the most sacred part of God's Temple and offered the blood of animals for himself and for the sins of the people. This was an act of atonement but its effects were only temporary. In the new covenant Jesus is mediator - both priest and sacrifice. Through his atoning blood we are blessed with access to God forever.
We see that in the Gospel Jesus calls the Twelve to join in his mission. As a result of their relationship with Christ, His followers are able to share the good news and bring healing to those in need. They become witnesses of Christ in their world.
Shedding blood and being Christ's witness are ideas that come together profoundly in the life of St. Agatha. In order to preserve her virginity and devotion to Christ, she refused the advances of a Roman prefect. As a result, she was arrested, tortured and cruelly disfigured. She eventually died in prison in 251 AD. The ultimate fruit of her dedication to Christ, however, is a share in the eternal salvation Jesus has gained for us.
Jesus, thank you for offering your blood for me. Give me the grace to be a witness to You in my daily life.
