Today's readings give two views of our world. In the First Reading from the Book of Genesis we read of the creation of our world and the universe around it by a loving God. Today we just hear of the first four days when God gave us the gift of light, the creation of the heavens above and the land mass on which we can live and with it the all kinds of plants, fruits and vegetation and finally the great lights - one for the day and one for the night. It is not a literal account of what happened but rather a listing of the gifts God has showered on us for the living of our lives. It says very loudly: God is good and everything he makes is good. In the Gospel we get a somewhat different picture. Wherever Jesus goes large crowds go in search of Him to experience the healing they need. Their faith was so strong that it was only necessary for them to touch the hem of His garment and they would be healed. The creating and loving God continues to take care of his children in the work of his Son Jesus. It is for us, on the one hand, to show our gratitude for the beauty of our world by treating it with deep respect and, on the other, doing what we can to bring healing and wholeness into people's lives by our love and service.
Anyone who follows me will have the light of life.
