At creation, God put into our hearts three fundamental desires through which to guide us on the pathway towards eternal life: the desire to be divine, the desire to be immortal; and the desire to be transcendent. We are created in the image of God and therefore we are "non-God gods." We are obviously not God, but we desire to become more and more truly the image of God in which we are created. So too we desire immortality in some form, whether in wealth, a famous name, our own posterity. We are irked by our limitations and desire to go beyond all limitations, even the limitation of being merely human, the limitation of life confined to this world.

It is not surprising then that the devil used these desires to tempt Eve: "you will be like gods" and "you will not die." The desires are good in themselves, for they are God's way of attracting us. Sin comes when we try to attain these desires by our own human strength. Sooner or later, in Jesus Christ, God makes us his own children, gives us eternal live and takes us beyond this world to the Kingdom of Heaven.
