In the Gospel we find Jesus and His disciples crossing the lake in their boat but they had forgotten to bring any bread with them. Meanwhile, Jesus was talking to them. He was warning them to avoid the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod. Clearly they did not know what He was talking about. Yeast was regarded by the Jews as a corrupting agent, so Jesus was telling them to avoid the corrupt elements of both the Pharisees, who were over-legalistic, and the Herodians, who were too loose in their ways. But all the disciples could hear was the word 'yeast' so Jesus must be referring to their having brought no bread. Then he reminds them of two recent experiences. When Jesus fed 5,000 people with five loaves there were 12 baskets left over and when he fed 4,000 with seven loaves there were seven baskets over. And here they are, less than 20 people in the company of Jesus, and they are worried about having no bread? "Do you not understand anything?" he asks them. "Are you not able to see?" And, in fact, in the very next passage Mark describes the healing of a blind man and the eyes of the disciples are very soon to be opened. We all suffer from some blindness in our understanding of Jesus and his teaching.
