The first reading today contains all the elements found in the Book of Deuteronomy: commandments, blessing and curse, the appeal for obedience. After Israel's experience in the desert, she is now called to make a choice. Her whole future is dependent on that choice.
In life, we constantly have to make choices - choices that concern work, food, TV programmes, school, family life etc. The process of making a choice can be more difficult especially if it concerns our future. This is what Israel experienced - a choice that could change her whole future.
Choices in life are often coloured by our religious background. Our choices are based on what we believe. In the Gospel, Jesus tells us that we must be ready to undergo challenges and even suffer if we choose the Lord rather than what the world has to offer. The way of the Lord is the path of one who loves to the end. This may demand that we carry our own crosses and follow the Lord. Do we compromise in our decisions to gain favour from our friends? Do we compromise on our Christian values to receive promotions, to receive affirmation, to be in authority?
Lord, help us in all the choices we make. May we never compromise, and grant us the strength to persevere in difficult moments.
