Both of today's readings deal with fasting and its real meaning. The disciples of John the Baptist asked Jesus why they and the Pharisees fasted but Jesus and his disciples did not. Jesus compares His presence among his disciples to that of a bridegroom during a wedding. Certainly not a time for fasting but the time would come, after the Bridegroom had left them, and then they would fast. But the First Reading indicates other reasons. Isaiah quotes people as asking why they should fast or do penance if God does not notice. In his reply, Yahweh points out that on their fast days they are abusing their workers, squabbling among themselves and beating up the poor. With that kind of behaviour, their fasting will make little impression on the Lord. Fasting does not consist in looking miserable and lying on sackcloth and ashes. On the contrary, fasting consists in liberating the poor, sharing bread with the hungry, giving shelter to the homeless, clothing the naked. If they do these things, their light will shine like the dawn. Then, when they cry out, the Lord will hear them and will say, 'I am here'. He will expect the same of us.
With the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption.
