"Have you anything here to eat?" must certainly be the most humbling and touching words spoken by Jesus to His disciples following His greeting of peace and forgiveness to them. This seemingly humble request packs much for us to reflect upon.
On the part of the disciples - picture the disciples' frame of mind on the day of the Resurrection: they were downcast, possibly still feeling guilty for abandoning Jesus, and trying to make sense of what Cleopas had just reported about recognising Jesus at the breaking of bread at Emmaus. And suddenly, Jesus was standing amongst them eliciting a mixture of disbelief, fear and confusion in them. Let us reflect on the roller-coaster of emotions that the disciples went through - from confusion to fear to joy.
On the part of Jesus - Imagine having to prove yourself once again to your own disciples. Prove again that you are not a ghost; prove that you have no ill-feelings against them but great love instead; prove that you are really alive and "how it is written that the Christ would suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that, in His name, repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be preached to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem." And that the disciples were called to be witnesses to all of these amazing events.
Let us reflect on the Lord's humility as He exercised supreme patience and compassion towards His disciples.
Risen Christ, be with me in my uncertainty.
