Today Jesus asks, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” In response, He places a child among His disciples, imparting the lesson that true greatness is rooted in humility. Children embody qualities we often lose as we grow: openness, absence of prejudice, and a teachable spirit. These traits ought to be nurtured. Moving from children, Jesus highlights the “little ones” (anawim in Hebrew), referring to the vulnerable members of our community. He warns against the grave consequences of leading them astray, underscoring the responsibility we bear. Jesus shares the parable of the lost sheep, which powerfully illustrates God's love and concern for every individual. It serves as a reminder that it is God's Will that not even one of these “little ones” be lost.

Reflecting on Christ's message, I am reminded of our duty to protect and nurture the youth and the vulnerable within our communities. Two significant sins against them in the Church are neglecting proper care and education, as well as the damaging examples set by authority figures. Pope Leo XIV emphasises that young people are not only the future of the Church, but also its present, encouraging them to grow fully in their faith.

Just as Ezekiel faithfully consumed God's Word, I ought to let Scriptures and the Sacraments satisfy my hunger for God. Am I willing to be one of the “little ones” and serve others in that same spirit?
