How often do we look towards human knowledge and logic when we make a decision or take action? In writing his letter to the Corinthians, Paul is responding to some issues that are causing division in the community. Some are attacking the chosen leaders on the question of baptism and other matters. Paul states that these divisions come from the desire to compete for positions of leadership, which is the result of using worldly wisdom. Paul reminds them that he himself did not come to demonstrate his oratory skills or human knowledge. It is God's Spirit Who gives him the gifts and power to preach the Gospel despite his limitations.

When Jesus preaches to the people of Nazara, He initially impresses them with His wisdom. However, they begin to question His background and the source of His wisdom and power. In response, Jesus narrates examples of Elijah and Elisha, who carried out their ministry among the Gentiles. He too will do the same. This upsets the people. According to their human thinking, Jesus has to limit His ministry to the Jews. Jesus, however, makes it clear that He is not limited by human wisdom or expectations. His entire life and ministry are led by the Holy Spirit.

What about us? How often do we sincerely turn to the Holy Spirit for guidance? Or do we prefer to depend mainly on human wisdom and on people's expectations?
